Essence of Ninjutsu

About Us

We are a dojo dedicated to the practice of Budo Taijutsu as taught by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi (34th Soke of Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu).  The Mystic Mountain dojo was founded by our Sensei, Frank Hill.  A member of the Shidoshi Kai, he currently holds a 11th Dan in our style and receives his training directly from Japan as a personal student of Hatsumi Sensei. Frank has been training and teaching students of all ages for 23 years. He teaches Ninjutsu Internationally and is a full-time paramedic. He has worked with Law Enforcement agencies such as the Toronto Emergency Task Force, and the RCMP. He has conducted numerous workshops on Rape Protection and Child Street-Proofing. In addition to this, he was the Whitby Control Group Representative for both Nuclear and Disaster management in the region of Durham.

We are currently training in Oshawa, Ontario. Visit our photo gallery for a few shots of the old dojo. We are still looking for a place to build the new dojo.

"Unlike so many martial arts today, Ninjutsu bases its teachings on real life situations and threats beyond that of mere self defense.

As a teenager, I had always been fascinated by the legend of the Ninja Warriors. But, I have to admit that, even after studying this art for four years, I refused to believe that it was the real thing. It was not until I went to Japan over 20 years ago that I became a believer. I continue to train with Sensei and some of the most elite warriors in the world; Masad, Rangers, Navy Seals etc...

Over the years of training, I have come to realize my distorted perception of the world around me. My perception of strong and weak, love and compassion, good and bad, was on a more egotistical level. I over-looked the psychological strengths of spiritual training. I had distorted the meaning of love and compassion with the misguided wants and desires that originated through years of mental conditioning. I evaluated who I was by what I had. My conditioned mind was a trap that destroyed some of the most meaningful relationships that I have ever had. Learning how to recognize and, more importantly, change these conditioned responses has greatly improved my relationships with the world and my training.

I hope that you, too, find the path that you are looking for; the warrior path that considers all aspects of survival; the path of Hatsumi sensei's legendary Togakure Ninpo warriors."

What Makes Us Different From Most Other Styles?

The following was written by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, on the topic of the Bujinkan and other
Japanese martial arts:

The martial arts, in the true sense of why the martial arts were developed over a thousand years ago in Japan, have been totally distorted and perverted today.  Foreign students don't know any better because they believe in what the oriental teachers tell them.  Everything has been turned into a sport, an overly regimented or complicated abstract form, or into a false system of violent talk that would have no effectiveness at all on the street.
I do not mean to defile the Japanese martial arts with these comments.  That is not my purpose.  However, I do want people to know the true histories of where the martial arts came from.  Judo, Karate, Aikido - these are all wonderful arts, and I hold teaching licenses in all of them.  They have many desirable aspects that have attracted millions of students all over the world.  I have experienced all of the popular Japanese martial arts, but wanted to find a true fighting art.  I was searching for an art unlimited by any rules.  There is nothing more dreadful and horrifying than a rule that says there are no rules.  I had to go through many martial arts, but I finally made it to where I am now.  My stand based on the training that was handed down to me, is that Bugei, the warrior arts, should be recognized more as actual arts.  As arts, these martial methods are an embodiment of peaceful intentions.  The martial arts are a manifestation of your intentions to live your life as it should be lived as a total human being.  That is what flows as the basis of the authentic historical martial arts.

The Essence of Ninjutsu, as explained by Toshitsugu Takamatsu (33rd Soke):

The essence of all martial arts and military strategies is self-protection and the prevention of danger.  Ninjutsu epitomizes the fullest concept of self-protection through martial training in that the Ninja art deals with the protection of not only the physical body, but the mind and spirit as well.  The way of the Ninja is the way of enduring, surviving, and prevailing over all that would destroy one.  More than delivering strikes and slashes, and deeper in significance than the simple outwitting of an enemy; Ninjutsu is the way of attaining that which we need while making the world a better place.  The skill of the Ninja is the art of winning.
